DSLR Remote Pro for Windows release history

Windows 7: DSLR Remote Pro for Windows runs on both the 32-bit and the 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Windows 7 Starter. Cameras which are supported on Windows Vista should also work on Windows 7.

Which Cameras Support Remote Live View? Canon introduced live view display on the Canon EOS-1D Mark III in spring 2007. Camera models released before spring 2007 do not have a live view capability.

Cameras that do support live view and can be used to display remote live view on a PC screen using DSLR Remote Pro for Windows: Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III, Canon EOS-1D Mark IV, Canon EOS-1D Mark III, Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EOS 7D, Canon EOS 40D, Canon EOS 50D, Canon EOS 500D/Rebel T1i, Canon EOS 450D/Rebel XSi, Canon EOS 1000D/Rebel XS.

Cameras that do not support live view: Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II, Canon EOS-1D Mark II, Canon EOS-1D Mark II N, Canon EOS 5D, Canon EOS 30D, Canon EOS 20D, Canon EOS 10D, Canon EOS 400D, Canon EOS 350D, Canon EOS 300D, Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi, Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, Canon EOS Digital Rebel, Canon EOS D60, Canon EOS D30

Please note: some cameras have live view disabled when you get them and so you need to enable live view via the camera's menus before you can use it (please see your camera manual for details).

Trouble shooting camera connection problems

Please check the following if you are having problems connecting to your camera:
  1. The Canon USB or Firewire drivers are installed on your computer. The latest versions can be downloaded from Canon's website
  2. The latest firmware is installed for your camera (this can be downloaded from Canon's website)
  3. If possible connect the camera directly to a port on your computer using the cables supplied with the camera. Connecting via a hub or using a longer cable may result in an unreliable connection.
  4. Some cameras have a communications setting in the camera menus and this should be set to "Normal" or "PC Connection" not "PTP" or "PTP/Printer". Please check this setting is set correctly if you camera shows "Busy" when you try to connect it to your PC.
  5. Please ensure a memory card is in your camera if it is set to shoot only if a card is present (custom function 2 on most cameras) otherwise it will not connect
  6. Only use the Firewire connection with Canon EOS-1D and Canon EOS-1Ds cameras as the USB connection is only intended for direct connection to compatible printers
  7. Please try the following if you are having problems with the camera locking up with busy flashing on the LCD:
    a) Set the camera to JPEG only or raw only rather than raw+JPEG
    b) Save images to the PC only or the camera only rather than to PC and camera

  1. Why doesn't live view work on my camera?
    First check that live view is enabled in the camera settings (these can be accessed by pressing the menu button on the back of the camera). Next check that the camera's exposure mode is set to P, Tv, Av or M. Live view is not available with some camera models when the exposure mode is set to full auto mode or the subject settings (sport, landscape, portrait etc.). Please see the live view page for more information on using live view and a list of cameras that support live view.

  2. How far can I setup my camera from the PC?
    The maximum length of a USB cable is 5m. Active USB repeater cables can be used to extend the cable length to approx 20m but this can be unreliable. A more expensive option is to use Cat 5e USB 2.0 extenders and fiber optic extenders and these can be used for longer distances than active USB cables. The Canon EOS-1D and 1Ds use FireWire and the maximum cable length is 4.5m. FireWire repeaters are also available to extend the cable length to around 20m. Suppliers of USB and Firewire repeaters can be found by searching on Google with search phrases like "USB repeater" or "USB extender". You can also use a USB server which connects to an ethernet LAN e.g. a USB server from Belkin, Silex or Keyspan

  3. Is it possible to use manual focus when the camera is connected to the PC?
    Yes, this is possible using the remote live view display with the latest Canon EOS models (e.g. Canon EOS-1D Mark III, Canon EOS 40D and Canon EOS 450D/Rebel XSi). In remote live view the lens can be focused using DSLR Remote Pro for Windows' unique autofocus or manually focused using the mouse wheel or cursor keys.
    With older camera models manual focus can be used by switching the camera lens to manual focus but can't be controlled from the PC.

  4. Is there a way to display live view images on a PC?
    Yes, this is possible with the latest Canon EOS models (e.g. Canon EOS-1D Mark III, Canon EOS 40D and Canon EOS 450D/Rebel XSi) using DSLR Remote Pro for Windows' remote live view display. This makes it possible to display a large full frame view or a magnified portion of the image on the PC's screen. Please see the live view page for more details.
    With older Canon EOS cameras the imaging sensor on Canon digital SLRs is blocked by the mirror and shutter curtains when not taking pictures. With older models you can use a system like the Zigview S2 to display viewfinder images on a remote monitor. This works by mounting a small video camera to look through the camera's viewfinder.
    A live viewfinder display is also available with Canon PowerShot cameras using our PSRemote software.

  5. I would love to use this software on my Mac. Do you have any plans to bring out a Mac version?

  6. Does your software give me greater control for time-lapse photography than the software bundled with the camera?
    Yes, the time-lapse feature allows the interval between shots and the duration of the time-lapse sequence to be set to any value you wish. Please ensure the PC does not hibernate or shutdown during the sequence and the camera is powered using an external power supply during long time-lapse sequences.

  7. Can I use this software to control more than one camera from a PC?
    Yes, you can control multiple Canon EOS-1D Mark III, EOS 5D Mark II, EOS 30D, EOS 40D, EOS 50D, EOS 500D/Digital Rebel T1i, EOS 450D/Digital Rebel XSi, EOS 1000D/Digital Rebel XS or EOS 400D/Digital Rebel XTi on Windows XP using DSLR Remote Pro for Windows. We have successfully tested it with 16 Canon EOS 30D cameras connected to a single PC. Please note: You need to run one copy of the standard version DSLR Remote Pro for Windows for each camera connected to your PC. Please see our DSLR Remote Pro Multi-Camera software for more information on controlling multiple cameras.
    Due to software limitations in the Windows camera drivers it isn't possible to control multiple cameras with older EOS models e.g. Canon EOS 20D or Canon EOS 5D
  8. Is it possible to use bulb mode for exposures longer than 30 seconds?
    Yes, bulb exposures from a few seconds to many hours can be controlled from a PC using DSLR Remote Pro for Windows with the latest Canon EOS models (e.g. Canon EOS-1D Mark III, Canon EOS 50D, Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EOS 500D/Rebel T1i and Canon EOS 450D/Rebel XSi)
    With older camera models bulb mode can only be used by releasing the shutter from the camera. If the shutter is released from the PC the maximum exposure time available with older camera models is 30 seconds (by selecting Tv exposure mode).

  9. Can I use the controls on the camera when it is connected to a PC?
    Yes, you can use the camera's controls when it is connected to a PC.

  10. Why are raw files from the Canon EOS-1D and EOS-1DS displayed so small?
    Raw files from the original Canon EOS-1D and 1Ds models (not the Mark II or Mark III models) only contain a small thumbnail image and the raw data. It would be too slow for DSLR Remote Pro for Windows to convert the raw file to display each image and so it displays the small thumbnail instead. It is recommended that you set the camera to Raw+JPEG mode so that DSLR Remote Pro for Windows can use the JPEG to display a larger image.

  11. Will DSLR Remote Pro for Windows run on a Pocket PC or iPhone/iPad?
    No, the Canon libraries used to control the camera are only available for desktop versions of Windows (e.g. Windows Vista and Windows XP) and Mac OS X and will not run on a Pocket PC or an iPhone/iPad. You can run DSLR Remote Pro for Windows on a netbook or an ultra mobile PC that runs Windows XP or Windows 7 e.g. Asus Eee PC, MSI Wind, Acer Aspire One or Samsung Q1.

  12. Can I use the Canon wireless transmitter with DSLR Remote Pro for Windows?
    Yes, you can use the Canon wireless transmitter to control a Canon camera using DSLR Remote Pro for Windows. The Canon WFT-E2/WFT-E2A wireless transmitter supports the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III and Canon EOS-1D Mark III, the Canon WFT-E3/WFT-E3A wireless transmitter supports the Canon EOS 40D and Canon EOS 50D and the Canon WFT-E4/WFT-E4A wireless transmitter supports the Canon EOS 5D Mark II.


  13. What does "H/W Error 0x00008d07" mean?
    This error is caused by a bug in the Canon libraries when using some camera models with the "Save to camera only" option. The following camera models are affected by this bug: Canon EOS 50D, Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EOS 450D/Rebel XSi, Canon EOS 1000D/Rebel XS, Canon EOS-1D Mark III and Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III. If you get this error please try using the "Save to camera and PC" or "Save to PC only" options instead.
    Update, 11 December 2009: This has been fixed in DSLR Remote Pro v1.8
